Thailand has repeatedly tinkered with price supports for farmers. This is why all eyes are on Thailand, the world’s largest exporter. The domestic price of rice matters, and so does the amount of rice available on global markets. Department of Agriculture predicts that Thai rice exports could fall by 20% in 2012 , a potential boon to Vietnam, the world’s second-largest exporter. The taxi driver tries the typical cheating on the meter, but fortunately I have Martin out to greet me and upbraid him when I arrive at his house where I am staying a couple of nights. I arise at a very early hour this morning, and eat breakfast in the hotel dining room as the building's electricity goes on and off several times. You wouldn’t believe the lines at the gas stations for the 4 gallons per day that private vehicles are allowed....
