So, after a long train journey, we got off at Phun Phin, just outside Surat Thani. Next morning we had breakfast and checked out, and got on the bus into Surat Thani to get the boat. (Although I didn't quite approve of how they did it - Mike telling me we had to leave at 1 in the morning just so they could laugh at my startled 'what what what's wasn't very funny. Mike and Nikki had to wake me up to shower, brush my teeth and get changed, otherwise I would have slept like that for the night.

Occasionally the sun from our part of the window will shine on the top of her head and she holds her hand over it. Finally she arranges with the conductor and moves to a seat on the other side of the train. It doesn’t take us as long to walk to the station as what we had planned, so we have time to have a cup of coffee and watch the scene in the train station from the cafe balcony. I walk down the platform to see if I can determine where Coach 2 will stop – is it the front of the train or the rear. We travel north out of Bangkok to Bang Sue, the connection with the subway, then curve to the west. They even pressure wash the exterior of the train when it comes into the station. Now we push the drapes open completely so we have a good view out the window. The woman seated in front of us keeps closing the drapes. I am still thinking in “Indian Train” terms, where the trains are 20 and 30 coaches long....
